Responsibilities
The President/CEO provides overall leadership and management to co-create and support the vision and mission of the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence.
Duties include working with the Board of Directors to establish and implement the strategic direction of the Center; developing effective partnerships and strategic alliances throughout the State of Colorado; developing and ensuring the quality of Center services and programs; ensuring cost-effective management of Center operations; developing the resources needed to maintain the operations and activities of the Center; and providing overall direction for communications, public information, public policy and outreach efforts. The President/CEO is responsible for managing a $3 million annual operating budget and a staff of 14.
Leadership
Provide leadership and vision for the implementation of the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence’s strategy, in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
- Lead the long-range and strategic planning process of the Board of Directors, ensuring that benchmarks are established for measuring success and that the planning cycles recur as appropriate.
- Develop and implement strategies in support of Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence’s vision, values, mission and goals.
- Develop a high profile for the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence within its various local, regional, and national constituencies, including donors, legislative and executive branches of government at all levels, corporations, foundations, and other nonprofits and friends.
- Be a visible advocate for enhancing the nursing profession and ensuring a sufficient supply of highly-qualified nurses to support the healthcare needs across our state.
- Develop and monitor the annual action plan based on the strategic goals adopted by the Board of Directors.
- Initiate and encourage collaboration and cooperation among other organizations and leaders.
- Develop and oversee the budget which includes an accurate, realistic forecasting of revenues and expenses for implementing the action plan, based on the goals established in collaboration with the Board.
Board Support and Development
Provide leadership in recruitment and development of board members and support the effective use of the board governance structure.
- Work with Board Nominating Committee to identify, recruit, orient, and retain a board of directors made up of outstanding leaders who are committed to and enthusiastic about Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence’s mission and values.
- Educate Board members on effective fundraising techniques and empower them to become directly involved in fundraising efforts.
- Ensure that the Board’s operating policies are implemented, reporting variances to the Board as required, and assuring that the Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence is in compliance with all legal requirements.
- Provide information and recommendations to the Board for setting or revising Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence’s goals and objectives, operating policies, and strategic planning priorities.
Fund Development
Work actively with the Board of Directors and the Development staff to increase funds to support Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence’s goals.
- Lead all aspects of Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence’s fundraising programs, focusing on cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gifts.
- Develop and implement fundraising goals in support of Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence’s strategic plans.
- Lead efforts to plan and complete special capital, endowment, or other long term campaigns.
- Oversee the creation, development and implementation of fundraising programs designed to build meaningful relationships with Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence’s various constituencies with the purpose of enhancing their involvement with Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence and build a tradition of philanthropic support.
- Involve members of the Board to secure major gifts in support of Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence’s priorities and strategic goals.
Programs
Provide leadership for overall program vision and content.
- Provide clear direction on agency mission and vision for all Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence affiliates and partnering organizations.
- In conjunction with staff and board, develop and implement long-range program strategies that assure continued excellence in program offerings.
- Oversee program evaluation on regular basis to ensure programs meet highest levels of quality.
- Oversee and assure adequate and safe facilities for program operations.
- Oversee compliance with all agency licenses and funding requirements.
Operations
Effectively manage and lead a quality staff with focus on hiring, developing, and retaining the best. Oversee all operational aspects of Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence, ensuring effective use of resources and legal compliance.
- Recruit, select, motivate, develop, retain, and reward a high quality and capable staff to function and respond to Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence priorities.
- Work with staff to coordinate the effective and efficient operation of all areas of responsibility.
- Establish clearly defined and measurable goals to assess and reward the staff.
- Design and establish an effective and efficient set of core processes, systems, and infrastructure.
- Provide effective, efficient, and strategic management of Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence’s budget, consistent with relevant measures of costs and resource use.
- Support and foster the use of the Internet and other technologies to enhance clinical, development, communications, education, and advocacy programs.
- Implement and evaluate annual action plans based on agreed strategic goals.
- Create and encourage a collegial and participatory work environment where trust, integrity, and open communication are valued.
Outreach and Communication
Present Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence’s mission and program in a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders.
- Represent Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence routinely and professionally at local, state and national events through speaking, serving on committees, and presenting information sessions.
- Oversee all publications assuring consistency, accuracy and professionalism.
- Listen, communicate, motivate and build trust with diverse groups in dispersed geographic areas. Adapt writing and speaking styles appropriately.
- Serve as a primary spokesperson to the media.
- Create and nurture relationships with key reporters and editorial boards.
Qualified Candidates must demonstrate experience and competence in the following areas:
- Effective organizational and leadership reflecting vision, strategy and entrepreneurship.
- Inspirational and creative energy with a passion for innovation and systems improvement.
- Expert knowledge on the contemporary issues facing healthcare and nursing, both within Colorado and nationally.
- Understanding and management of diverse perspectives with the ability to build effective coalitions and partnerships among stakeholders.
- Effectively develop, analyze, synthesize and communicate information to support decision making and problem solving within the public and private sectors.
- Strong communications skills—verbally, in writing and in public speaking.
- Effective networking and relationship-building skills.
- Expertise in the development, evaluation and improvement of programs, services and operations.
- Effective staff recruitment, management, development, coaching and team-building.
- Proficiency in fundraising, grant writing and management of business ventures.
- Experience in budget development and reporting; contracting and compliance; and development and maintenance of organizational infrastructure.
Required Education and Experience:
- Relevant Baccalaureate degree required. Master’s Degree highly preferred. Nursing and/or related healthcare experience also highly preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years of senior level leadership experience required. A portion of this experience in a nonprofit organization is preferred.
- Also candidates must be willing to travel locally, regionally and nationally as needed and to reside in the Denver metro area.
