About the Colorado Clinical Placement Technology System In order to graduate, every student nurse must go outside the classroom for training at clinical agencies in all areas of specialty. Coordinating multiple clinical rotations for all their students challenges every school of nursing, especially as growing enrollments have strained the capacity of previously existing arrangements between schools and clinical sites. The result: bottlenecks that make it harder for students to meet clinical requirements in a timely way, and contribute to the long waiting lists for entry into nursing programs. By slowing the development of new nurses, these delays contribute to Colorado 's ongoing nursing shortage. Now, the Colorado Nursing Clinical Placement Inventory and Matching System Pilot Project can help ease those bottlenecks. Its core is a searchable, Web-based database. The database includes information about both participating clinical agencies (unit descriptions, student requirements for that facility, etc.) and nursing schools (course requirements, clinical objectives, etc.). All clinical areas (e.g., medical/surgical, pediatrics, OB , behavioral health, etc.) will be available, and placements will be offered to all pre-licensure levels of nurses (LPN, ADN, BSN). The initial database (Jan. 2007) includes 9,445 placements; we expect that number to increase significantly as other agencies join the pilot. Benefits
The Colorado Health Foundation is funding the two-year pilot project as part of “Partners Investing in Nursing's Future,” a collaboration with the Robert Wood Johnson/Northwest Health Foundation. The Central Colorado Area Health Education Center (AHEC) underwrites Year One database licensing fees . The Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence manages the platform under the direction of the Clinical Placement Implementation Oversight Committee. Questions?
