Mentor Program for Students
Mentoring Program for Ethnically and Racially Diverse Nursing Students
The Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence has received Health Research and Services Administration (HRSA) funds to offer a mentoring program for ethnically and racially diverse nursing students who are underrepresented in nursing. The long-term goal is to increase diversity in the nursing workforce.
This year-long program pairs nurse students with a experienced clinical nurse mentor. The mentors helps students (mentees) clarify their education and career goals and develop strategies to reach those goals by sharing insights and knowledge they have gained through their own experience.

Who will be my mentor?
You will be matched with a nurse mentor based on the answers you provide in the mentee application. All mentors have a minimum of a BSN, most represent diverse backgrounds and they share a wide array of clinical and/or academic experiences.

Eligibility Criteria
- Must be actively enrolled in nursing program through May 2024 or beyond at one of the following accredited undergraduate nursing program in Colorado (ADN, BSN, or RN-BSN program) with the intent of staying in CO post-graduation.
- Colorado State University Pueblo
- Metropolitan State University
- Northern New Mexico
- Otero College
- Must be a United States, citizen, a non-citizen national of the United States, or a foreign national who possesses a visa permitting permanent residence in the US.
- Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible and may not receive NWD grant support.
- Nursing student must be willing to fully participate in this program for 1 year.
- Applicant must be ethnically/racially diverse as defined by HRSA (the source of funds for this program). “For the purposes of this program, the term “underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities” include Black or African Americans, Hispanic or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians.”
- Applicants must be either economically or educationally disadvantaged.
