Storytelling as a Way to Cultivate Self-Compassion

Share YOUR Nursing Story!

The Colorado Center for Nursing Excellence, along with hundreds of community members, lead the Colorado Action Coalition (COAC). There are four Strategic Advisory Committees tasked with planning the Future of Nursing Recommendations implementation in Colorado over the next decade. Strategic Action Committee (SAC) #3 is leading the charge on the Nurse Wellbeing recommendation. They have launched a research study: Storytelling as a Way to Cultivate Self-Compassion.

Here’s where you come in. This research project seeks to elicit Registered Nurses’ (including APRNs) unique stories related to their roles in professional practice and the presence of self-compassion to support the physical and mental health needs of working nurses to cultivate:

  • Emotional Wellbeing
  • Wellbeing for Yourself and Your Community
  • Resilience in a Challenging World

This research project has IRB approval through Colorado Mesa University and is open to all nurses 18 and older.

  • Requires an audio recording or written document of your story
  • Participation in a brief pre & post recording survey

Each step below will be included in one online form. Plan ahead and allow for at least 30 minutes to complete the process.

  1. Provide your information.

  2. Complete consent form.

  3. Complete the 12-question pre-storytelling survey.

  4. Create a 5–10-minute recording (audio only) using your phone, tablet or laptop. Alternatively, you can write your story.

Your story should include:

  • What are the rewards and struggles in your nursing role(s)? Can you share a story?
  • How do you find balance in your nursing role(s)? Can you share a story?
  • Why do you stay in nursing?
  • Share a story about a time when you felt really proud to be a nurse and/or overwhelmed by being a nurse.
  1. Upload the audio recording or written story into the online form.

Recording Tip:  Record in a quiet space and remain close to the device for optimal audio.

  1. Take the 12-question post-storytelling survey.

  2. Submit the completed form including the uploaded recording or document.

What’s Next?

Your deidentified survey results will be sent to the research team for evaluation.

Phase 2 of this research study will be to share the recordings and/or documented stories with nurses who will also complete a pre & post survey. The objective is to evaluate if listening to a nurse's story can be impactful compared to a nurse sharing their own story.
